Discrimination can be talked about in so many different levels. It can be from racial, sexual, religious, or even the way someone looks like something as little as wearing glasses. It happens on a constant basis in all different ways and all different settings from job settings to just general day to day connections with other people in the general public. Discrimination comes from people who don’t understand or don’t like something on or dealing with someone with differenced than themselves.
This blog will be mainly about the visual part of discrimination generally around body modifications. For centuries people of all different cultures have been modifying their bodies in all different ways such as branding, piercing, tattooing, or body modification. Some people just do not understand why or know why people would modify their bodies and that is totally ok, because they do not have to understand or know who someone would do anything different. All people want that have done anything to modify their body is just acceptance because no matter what we have done to our bodies that does not change the person inside.
Body modification can be as little as just a simple ear piercing to something as large as being heavily pierced, tattooed, changing their hair color, wearing non-conventional clothing or adding implants to change the look of a certain body part and if someone do not see it as normal as they feel they should be. They will look at them and say stuff (more often than not) in a negative manor. Instead of just accepting it a lot of people feel that it is not right because they do not feel it is normal. A lot of times the more that people with body mods are discriminated against will do it that much more, sometimes some people will hide their mods to prevent the comments from other people.
Some people will look people with Body mods as evil or crazy or even referred to as freaks and they will see you as something else then what they feel you are supposed to be in their own minds. Some job settings will feel you will work worse or are different person because you have modified your own body in some way. No one should dictate what someone else should do or not do their own body. For a long time body mods were taboo and done in private and hidden because of the opinion of the general public but as time went on people started to say if you do not like it do not look at it. Even though there is still a lot of people will say stuff or give their opinion and it is still somewhat hidden from some people but it is becoming more and more accepted from one person to another but as far as the general public it is still (for now) looked at as something that is wrong and something you just should not do.
More often than not people that have their bodies modified end up becoming the outcasts of their society. A lot of times the people that have been named as outcasts will end up coming together because of the acceptance with mods with people that already have them and are looking for acceptance from others and already know they will not be looked down on, judged or discriminated against. People modify their own bodies for different reasons. The reasons that people modify their bodies are their own, they do it for themselves and as long as they do not hurting anyone else it should not be discriminated against. Being discriminated against can be hard on a person’s self-confidence but after a while the person can become used to it and actually use it to drive them to doing more modifications on or to themselves.
