Ampallang is a type of genital piercing for the male that passes horizontally through the flesh of the glans. The puncture passes above the urethra or through the urethra.
Typical ampallangs piercing is done in of the two positions. It may be either a transurethral or maybe not. Transurethral ampallang piercing leads through urethra. The benefit of transurethral piercing is, the urine facilitate to remain the piercing hygienic. Another fact is transurethral piercing is easier to be healed because as the piercing is divided in the urethra, it is likely to be healed to smaller piercing.
Ampallang piercing is commonly regarded as the "toughest" genital piercing for male along with another type "apadravvas". This sort of piercing is also one of the painful types of piercing. The healing time is varied from two to six months, and sometimes even longer.
An issue regarding this piercing is, it can damage or injure the soft palate and teeth of the partner during oral sex. Some may think that ampallang increases the pleasure of sex, but it is nothing but a misconception.
This sort of piercing was performed in different Polynesian communities, especially by the Borneo and the Dayak people.
